Art by Carl Peterson
My seventh-grade English teacher (Boyd Hahn, at Maconaquah Middle School) taught me that Westerns are always about change. Progress brings conflict, chaos and violence. When I decided to include a Western in this story, I knew there wouldn’t be space for the genre’s usual epic scope. So instead I focused on one individual’s decision to change. As to whether that change will take… perhaps that’s a story for another time.
I met Carl Peterson in the Comics Experience Creators Workshop, and he was the perfect artist for this story. His luscious linework and gorgeous shading provided the sense of atmosphere and place that all great Westerns require. Looking over these pages, I can practically feel the crisp air and biting cold of the Dakota territories.
